Where to start. At a simple honourable and essential level, it is because First Australians “are Australia”; First Australians are "First". Sadly, we cannot undo history, so First Australians need an equal voice in Parliament as is their right as "First Australians". First Australians need to be at the top of the Constitutional change. It is essential so that Australia as a country can benefit directly from the deep, vast culture of First Australians in a more inclusive way than has hitherto been the case.
Australia as a country with the history that has played out since Cook’s arrival has a deep and ignorant wound of shame in its side and the Uluru Statement from the Heart is essential to help all Australians understand that equality for First Australians in Parliament is a moral and human right.
• Sovereignty. Acknowledgement that Aboriginal tribes were the first
sovereign nations of the Australian continent, that sovereignty was never ceded and that it co-exists with the sovereignty of the Crown.
• Constitutional reform. Constitutional reforms would empower Aboriginal
people to manage their own affairs and righten the current skewed statistics for e.g. incarceration or suicide.
