To Co-Design Body
I'm a young trans man who's been an active member of the LGBT+ community for many years now. I'm a bachelor student at Curtin University studying animation and illustration. I'm now in my third year of my major and 5th year total studying at university. I was previously a psychology student at U.W.A. before I found my love for the arts. I'm additionally a freelance illustrator and have participated in many community art projects in the Fremantle and Perth areas. I was born in England, but grew up in Australia, Fremantle has always been my home. But it wasn't until recently thanks to the Curtin Reconciliation Initiative, that I learned how much my education had been lacking in Australian history.
The Uluru Statement of the Heart provides a voice for Indigenous people of Australia who's history has been deliberately ignored for too long. It's important for non Indigenous Australians to recognise the need to uplift the voices of those who have been silenced as a result of our recent ancestors.
We should enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation. Our constitution still contains embarrassingly racist foundations that reflect poorly on modern day Australia. If we want to be seen as a tolerant and welcoming country, we need to make changes. I don't want to have history show Australia as a racist country, this is our home, and I want to be proud of it.
It is important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them. Indigenous people have a better insight into the matters most directly affecting them and their culture. They have a deep understanding of their history and culture, and a right to be heard.
For any marginalised or oppressed group it is vital to have a voice to speak out on issues affecting them in Parliament. So that the issues directly affecting them can be addressed, without being disregarded by intolerant individuals. I want to help improve my local and national community.
Too many important social issues are ignored within parliament. Many of the younger generation myself included are growing restless because of the lack of action within the government. The fact that Australia is the last Commonwealth to have failed to make a treaty is shameful. It's 2021 time to make a stand.
Thank you
