Submission to Indigenous Voice Co-Design Process Interim Report to the Australian Government

Who we are

The School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Queensland is comprised of a
multidisciplinary group of academics, clinicians, professional staff and students, who contribute to a healthier
Australian population through research and teaching activities in the fields of exercise science, physical
activity, biomechanics, sports psychology, sports coaching, history, social and cultural studies, and nutrition
sciences.

We acknowledge the important role that University of Queensland plays in advancing Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander peoples and communities through strengths-based teaching and learning practices as well as
research and engagement.

The Country where the University of Queensland Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences is located and
operates has always been a significant place of teaching and learning as well as research and engagement.

Elders and Knowledge Holders have nurtured this Country and its peoples for over 60 millennia.

What we support

In accordance with the historical evidence, we affirm that this has always been and always will be Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Country, including land and water, and acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander sovereignty was never ceded.

We support the Uluru Statement calls for a First Nations Voice to Parliament and a Makarrata Commission to
supervise a process of agreement-making and truth-telling because we fully support processes that will
promote greater recognition and incorporation of First Nation Peoples in all Australian matters.

We support the three key elements to the reforms set out in The Uluru Statement:
1. Constitutional Change – Involves enshrining a First Nations Voice in the Australian Constitution that would
empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
2. Legislative Change – Involves the establishment of a Makarrata Commission. The Makarrata Commission
would supervise a process of agreement-making with Australian governments.
3. The Makarrata Commission – Would also oversee a process of truth-telling about Australia’s history and
colonisation
