I have read the Statement: Interactive Uluru Statement - From The Heart
I believe it is time to include the Voice of First Nations peoples, and there to be meaningful recognition of their voice in the Constitution.
Due consultation processes have already been made. In May 2017, regional dialogues culminated in the First Nations National Constitutional Convention at Uluru. They reached a consensus on a way forward for constitutional change, through a Voice to Parliament.
The loss of sovereignty, culture, dignity and recognition has never been properly addressed. The Statement shows how to achieve a path forward, to allow indigenous peoples to take their rightful place in this country. Only then will their children flourish. Children are the centre of the world. This submission if for all children, and the children of the future.
The Voice of indigenous peoples needs to be constitutionally enshrined, so it is not diminished by changing governments. After this, legislation about HOW the Voice will look in practice can be created with consultation from those constitutionally approved people who become the Voice.
I support a referendum as soon as possible to begin the process. We owe this to our indigenous brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and elders so that a multi-decade approach to closing the gap can be prioritised.
The Uluru Statement is where all the different stories come together. I believe non-indigenous people can walk beside our indigenous brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and elders and attend to this matter as a priority. I stand beside and with them, and speak these words from my heart.
