Dear Co-Design Body
Co-design process: Submission
I am a self-employed white Australian, working as a facilitator and workplace trainer, descended from colonists and convicts, and as mainstream and middle-class in breed and background as you could find anywhere.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
I feel very passionately that the Uluru Statement from the Heart is an important and generous invitation to build a more connected, fair, equal, and inclusive society.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
It is important that the Voice to Parliament be enshrined in the Constitution in order to protect it from future changes to legislation, from being backgrounded or diminished by future governments, and to afford Indigenous Australians the guarantee of consistency.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
Indigenous people have long suffered from systemic disadvantages and in order to 'close the gap' it is imperative that they have a voice within the national government. This voice needs to be enshrined in the constitution.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
An Indigenous Voice to Parliament would ensure that Indigenous Australians get a greater say and more over authority over decisions that affect them. How can we possibly improve quality of life and equity of opportunity to these Australians if they are not adequately consulted and their views not better respected.
I am writing this letter on behalf of myself and also my father, a 90 year old retired small businessman. In his long life he believes that the Uluru Statement from the Heart is the most important political innovation he has ever seen forwarded, and he was horrified that a former proposal for a Voice to Parliament was rejected. He hopes that, by the time he dies, he will see definite moves under way to have the Voice enshrined in the Constitution.
Yours sincerely
