The Uluru Statement calls for a constitutionally guaranteed advisory body to provide advice to Parliament. The proposed body has no voting rights and will not alter the make-up of the Australian Parliament but most importantly it will for the first time give First Nations Peoples a direct voice to parliament.

Importantly, the Uluru Statement also calls for a Makarrata Commission to engage with all Australian governments in order to reach agreement for more active steps in ‘truth telling about our history’.

The Ulurua Statement from the heart was the culmination of a mammoth communication process with indigenous people across Australia. I believe that its full adoption would do much to bring healing to indigenous people resulting from the adverse consequences of colonization.

I implore the Prime Minister and the Australian government to urgently reconsider its rejection of the Uluru Statement.

The government needs to honour its election commitment to a referendum once a model for the Voice to advise parliament has been settled
