Lucy Guerin In Submission to the Indigenous
Voice Co-Design Process

Lucy Guerin Inc is a contemporary dance company based on the lands of the Woi Wurrung
peoples of the Kulin Nation and we recognise that sovereignty of these lands was never ceded.
We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land and honour their knowledge
and movement lineage, and continuing contribution to contemporary Australian artistic practice.

Lucy Guerin Inc is committed to improving representation, opportunities and career pathways
available for First Nations artists in contemporary dance and acknowledges the vital role their
creativity plays in our culture and our identity as a nation. This commitment is realised through
our program partnerships with First Nations led artistic and educational organisations.

We are grateful for the opportunity to express our support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart
and the recommendation for a permanent constitutional voice for First Nations people. We
support From the Heart Interim Report to the Australian Government: Indigenous Voice Co-
Design Process January 2021 From the Heart Submission No.1 21 January 2021.

We believe structural change is critical in progressing self-determination for First Nations people
through permanent political and legislative participation and strongly urge the Committee to
support the following calls:

• The government to honour its election commitment to a referendum once the model for
the Voice has been settled
• The enabling of legislation for the Voice to be passed after a referendum has been held
in the next term of Parliament
• A membership model for the National Voice that ensures previously unheard Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander people have the same chance of being selected as established
leadership figures

We thank you for your consideration of this submission.
