Hello, my name is Charlie Beaty and I am a youth practitioner in Adelaide. When I'm not at work, I will most likely be with my roller derby group. I started derby this year after wanting to for years. I gained qualifications for this job through studying a bachelor of psychological science degree at Charles Darwin University. Although I currently live in Adelaide, I grew up in Whyalla .
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
I think it is incredibly important to acknowledge that Aboriginal peoples were and are the first nations of Australia. It is also important to acknowledge that Australia as a continent still co-exists with the sovereignty of the crown.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
It is always so important for people to be empowered to speak up about matters affecting them. Having non-Indigenous people talk FOR Indigenous people would be like biological women talking over biological men while they are explaining their experiences with prostate cancer - it just makes not sense
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
It is not only empowering for Indigenous people to see themselves represented in parliament, it is also a necessary step for Australia to become a fair and equitable country.
Yours sincerely,
charlie beaty
