I fully support the Voice proposal, whether it be legislated or considered for inclusion in the
Constitution with only one key proviso relating to fairness and relevance.

This proviso would address the need for the Voice to serve people who are genuinely part of the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of interest.

It should not be diluted by accepting input or interference by people jumping on the bandwagon eg.

- Someone who is of European background but thinks growing a long beard and writing about
Indigenous history gives them the right to comment
- Someone who has lived all their life as a non-Indigenous person then late in life finds they
are perhaps 1-32th Indigenous due to a great-great-great grandfather someone in their past,
and thinking that gives them the right to comment through the Voice

I think Australians will have good faith if they know the Voice is reserved for people with a genuine
stake in the debate … not those who have no lived experience of being part of the Indigenous
community.

This would be especially relevant if the Voice is part of our Constitution as 100 years into the future
it would be conceivable that someone who is 1-128th Indigenous could try to force themselves on a
local, regional or national body in the way that a certain American politician tried to do, passing
themselves off as native American for personal advancement.

 

 

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the Elders past, present and emerging.
