I join the call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution.
I believe I am one of a growing majority of non-indigenous Australians who are joining with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people committed to the Uluru Statement from the Heart’s invitation to “walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future”.
With respect, I urge the Government to give consideration to this submission along with those of others who have contributed their experience and ideas during the consultation process.
1. In particular, I urge the Government to honour its election commitment to a referendum as soon as the model for the Voice has been decided. I believe it imperative that the Government actively supports the concept of the Voice when shaping the referendum question.
2. Following the referendum, it is further imperative that legislation for the Voice be drafted and enabled, ideally in the next term of Parliament.
For far too long in our nation’s history, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been excluded from the structures and function of government. Constitutional enshrinement and legislative design of a Voice to Government is not only timely, but also the most effective and respectful means of unifying our nation.
