To whom it may concern,
Thank-you for this opportunity to make a submission to the Co-design process for an Indigenous Voice. I'm a university researcher and educator based in Canberra.
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is a generous invitation from Australia's First Nations to walk hand in hand with all Australians to create a better future for all.
Indigenous peoples should have a Constitutionally-inshrined Voice to Parliament to enhance their participation in Australia's democracy.
It's crucial that a Voice to Parliament is enshrined in the Constitution so that its existence is not subject to the whims of election cycles. Australia was founded on First Nations land, and to deny the existence of Indigenous peoples in the Constitution is an injustice.
A Voice to Parliament will improve the lives of all Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples endure continued injustices and disadvantages compared to the majority of Australians - a Voice will empower First Nations to effectively address these challenges in a way that paternalistic, colonial approaches have failed. First Nations and all Australians walking and sharing wisdom together will create a healthier, more prosperous country.
Kind regards,
Megan Evans
