The Uluru Statement of the Heart represents a unique opportunity to accept an invitation from the indigenous people of this country to walk on a path of peace. The fact that they - the wronged and the hurt - have invited the country to make peace must be respected, along with their articulation of what they see as needed. To ignore those requests, after such careful and long consideration, is counter to the very idea of having a voice. The idea of structuring a voice, in circumstances where the very first action taken is to ignore what has been asked for, which is constitutional enshrinement of that voice, undermines the integrity of what the interim report now proposes; particularly in circumstances where consideration of constitutional enshrinement was actively excluded from the terms of reference.
I believe that the proposed voice should be enshrined in the constitution.
