Submission for Co-design process
My name is Ruby and I am not Indigenous. I was however adopted by the Warlpiri mob as a young girl with my family. My connection with the community started while living in Darwin where I witness community like nothing else. I am currently not studying however have studying mental health in the past. I am currently working for Port Philip Community Group providing community services for the Port Phillip area. I was born in Newcastle and have had the privilege to travel, experience and see a lot of the First Nations land. I currently live on Wurundjeri land.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
The Uluru statement from the Heart is absolutely important to bring sovereignty to this land. It is also important in acknowledging all that First Nation people provide and bring to this country. It will also allow voices to be heart, stories to be shared and acknowledgement of all that First Nation people have gone through.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
Because the constitution embodies the powers of the law and nation.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
It is incredibly important for indigenous people to be able to speak and share as they deserve the utmost respect and honour for all they have done for their country. They deserve recognition that white colonisers have stolen their land. The amount of discrimination, pain and hurt that the Indigenous people have experienced is absolutely horrendous and heart breaking.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
A voice to parliament will empower Indigenous people to take rightful place in their country as well as providing proper acknowledgment of people and their role in this country.
