I am a fifth generation 'white' Australian. I was born and grew up in Tasmania where we were taught the totally inaccurate 'history' that there were no indigenous people left in Tasmania and that Trugannini, whose head is in the Hobart Museum, was the last surviving indigenous Tasmanian . It was only when I left Tasmania to get my degree at ANU, Canberra, that I began to learn more accurate histories. I now live in the Northern Rivers area of NSW. Over the past 55 years I have listened again and again to the voices of Indigenous Australians reaching with love and understanding towards justice.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is of the utmost importance for all Australians. It won't heal the tragedies and injustices of the past, but it will be a strong step towards healthier and more positive futures for all of us.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
Because Constitutional changes are more permanent, harder to dismantle by legislation
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
It will be good for all of us, and give us some pride in our country.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
It is important for any of us to have a say in matters that affect us. Colonial and patriarchal systems must change.
All of Australia urgently needs the Uluru Statement from the Heart to be enshrined in the Constitution
Thank you,
