I wholeheartedly support the Uluru Statement From the Heart. As a non-Indigenous Primary and University Teacher (of a subject called 'Indigenous Studies and Learning'), I am keenly aware of the need to provide our Indigenous Australians with a voice. It is time we allowed our First Nations People a chance to have their say. While non-Indigenous Australians continue to make decisions on behalf of Indigenous Australians, there will always be a gap and we will never reach true Reconciliation.
I am asking for the Government to commit to a Referendum and that, when that Referendum is passed, the legislation for the Voice be passed as soon as possible. In addition, any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander must be provided equal chance to be selected as a member for the National Voice.
It is with much hope for a more reconciled future Australia that I make this statement.
