Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is important because it enables First Nations people to have a voice on issues directly affecting them. It provides a practical way to ensure representation.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
Representation is fundamental to our democratic system and it is fundamental that a Voice to Parliament is created to improve outcomes for communities. It will improve the processes and outcomes directly affecting people and create a more fair and just system.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
It is fundamental to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution for many reasons. First, it is the only form of constitutional recognition that has been collectively endorsed by First Nations people themselves. Second, it provides legitimacy and therefore is more likely to be effective in implementation. Finally, it is the strongest way to demonstrate a firm commitment to a respectful relationship and understanding of the integral and intrinsic place First Nations people have in this country.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
It is important for First Nations people to have a say in the matters that affect them because they have the best understanding of the unresolved challenges impacting them and their communities. This will enable better laws and better outcomes.
Kind regards,
