I am an educator and have had a passion for learning about culture since I was little, over half a century. I was lucky to be able to actively study at Macquarie University and Tranby college.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
All my life till around the change of the millennium I had a sense that Australia had been moving in a better direction in terms of cultural valuing and custodianship of our nation's treasures. Two decades in to this century and I'm flabbergasted at the lack of progress.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
It is critical that a voice is given to them in order for all the necessary steps to healing our nation to begin.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
The longest cultural heritage that is such a treasure of our nation should be valued. Their deep knowledge should be utilised to inform and improve decision-making. Enabling the increasingly healthy, inclusive community that I would be proud to be a part of. Value our brothers and sisters, aunties and uncles, and cousins.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
The rhetoric around closing the gap is just that unless sincere mechanisms of representation from indigenous communities are enabled. Then processes towards healing can begin.
Please act on this important matter sincerely and actively to enshrine an indigenous voice in parliament.
Yours sincerely,
David Cowell
