To whom it may concern,
I feel compelled to write in support of an Indigenous Voice created through the constitution as an immigrant to Australia reflecting on the need for reconciliation to redress the injustices following European settlement. I suggest this must be done by facilitating a far greater representation of indigenous people in decision making at all levels of government, including Parliament, than is currently the case.
I support the proposal of a national body that provides advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on relevant laws, policies and programs. Without indigenous counsel and representation, there is unlikely be to trust. Without trust, democratic governance and leadership is undermined.
I support the proposal of flexible local-regional level governance structures that are designed via consultation and then agreement between communities. The aim is to establish structures that are designed with specific challenges to a given area in mind, with very clear guiding principles. These challenges will change over time, as must their supporting frameworks. Mechanisms must be in place to demonstrate that the views of local communities are tabled and considered.
Without meaningful action on indigenous representation that is converted to action to improve the welfare for the first nations people of this land, Australia’s voice on human rights overseas is muted.
