My Reconciliation journey stems from my experience growing up in remote Indigenous communities in the NT, where I spent most of time on the Tiwi Islands. My Tiwi peers taught me so much about their way of life, their respect and connection to land, sea, family and totems. However it was only as an adult that I came to learn of the other side of Australia’s history and upon reflection understood that a lot of the challenges being faced by individuals and communities often where the direct result of intergenerational trauma. This discourse continues to permeate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs which is why Reconciliation is so important.
Reconciliation to me is about building understanding and empathy, moving towards a better future, celebrating the richness of all cultures, acknowledging the truths of our past and taking actions which reflect this commitment. Through empowering individuals and creating understanding positive change can occur. This is why i support an Indigenous Voice and believe it needs be be written n the Constitution. In addition any model must reflect on history and be critically reviewed against the Uluru Statement From The Heart and consider regional and remote representation and lastly we must have a referendum!

 

 

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the Elders past, present and emerging.
