Co-design process: Submission for Raisers Hub

We are making this submission on behalf of Raisers Hub - a specialist agency helping charities achieve their fundraising goals.

We believe the Uluru Statement from the Heart is extremely important. First Nations People deserve constitutional recognition and a voice to parliament to ensure that agreement making can be done on equal terms. it's critical that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people have a say in matters that affect them and to do that we need a representative Indigenous body protected within our constitution.

The impact on the entire Australian community will be significant. If the government doesn’t take leadership on this issue, we will lose the opportunity to achieve the wider objectives of constitutional recognition of First Nations, and lose the opportunity to say that we are a nation committed to developing and sustaining a respectful relationship with First Nations peoples.

We believe that it is important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them. Respect and recognition, and a more equal, fairer future for everyone is what the wider Australian community wants. Central to that is having a voice at that table for First Nations people that is protected and can't be removed at the behest of governments.

The Voice to Parliament needs to be enshrined to Parliament in the Constitution, not just included in legislation. Only through a constitutional referendum will the Voice have the public legitimacy and authority it needs to make sure the government and Parliament will take its advice seriously. Only constitutional enshrinement can give the Voice the necessary stability and certainty in its operation, free from the fear of abolition by one government to the next, while allowing for flexibility in design.
