Having just seen the Australian film “High Ground” (Stephen Johnson, executive producer and director), the audience was left with total disbelief at the horrific massacre of aborigines in Arnhem Land in the 1930’s. But this is just one representation of the injustices inflicted on the world’s longest continuing inhabitants (circa 65,000 years).
But Australia’s politicians continually (now 113 years) prevaricate on taking decisive action to address the inherent failures of the constitution in appropriately recognising Australia’s first inhabitants.
The ideal scenario to address this lack of action is best achieved through a four step process:
1. A change in the monarchy (which may be a "London Bridge is down" event)
2. Declaration of Australia as a republic.
3. Adoption of a new constitution reflecting the new republic that includes due recognition of all of Australia’s peoples; past present and emerging.
4. Adoption of the date of the formation of the Republic as Australia Day.
Only through a cathartic historical event can “The First Nations National Constitutional Convention's Uluru Statement from the Heart” call for a representative voice to Parliament, a Makarrata and recognition of Indigenous peoples, be incorporated in our constitution.
This event is not far off; time to prepare.
