I support enshrining the Indigenous voice in the Australian Constitution. I believe it is long overdue to offer the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a seat at the table of the Government of our shared country. The "Uluru - Statement from the Heart" which was written and presented to our nation's leaders in 2017, is not asking a great deal, considering how we have not embraced their rich and enduring culture to live and thrive alongside our own, but imposed our language and law on them and evicted them from their traditional lands, effectively disempowering their people. 'The Voice' is a small step toward recognising the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as valued members of our communities; having lived here for thousands of years and having the honour of being the oldest surviving culture on earth , there is much we can learn from them. Other countries such as New Zealand and Canada are much more respectful of their Indigenous peoples and we are dragging the chain in not valuing our own.

 

 

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the Elders past, present and emerging.
