Submission regarding an Australian Voice
As a non-Indigenous person, I am committed to upholding, strengthening and amplifying the voices of Australia’s First Nations. I implore the Australian government to hold a referendum on the establishment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to parliament.
The legislation of a Voice to parliament is necessary not only as part of the government’s commitment to reconciliation action, but also for forging a unified path forward.
First Nations communities are disadvantaged by the political, social and economic systems that simultaneously benefit non-Indigenous Australians. The government of this nation is responsible for ensuring that all voices have equal opportunity to express their needs, concerns and experiences related to these systems under which Australia is governed.
As identified by the Uluru Statement, there is not a single body that Indigenous community could identify that adequately represents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in current state. We need established mechanisms that directly feed Voices from a grassroots level to parliament, backed by power that animates an actual obligation.
