Submission to Co-design process
I am a 27 year old woman who grew up in Orange on Wiradjuri country, currently living in Newcastle on Awabakal land. I currently work in retail and have a degree in Natural History Illustration.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
We have been living on Aboriginal land without proper recognition for its custodians for far too long. Change is required to move forward and create an Australia that ALL its occupants feel proud and safe to exist in. There is so much division in our country, and this is such an important step in bridging the gap and creating an even playing field that should have been in place a long time ago.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
I believe a Voice to Parliament is instrumental in creating change to those within the community that are most at risk. Strong First Nations voices in government will create large-scale changes that will trickle down into communities, and give disadvantaged individuals a greater chance.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
Enshrining the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution ensures permanence and provides a guarantee that the Government is committed to long-term change.
Why do you think Indigenous people should have a Voice to Parliament?
First Nations people deserve a seat at the table more than anyone, to have a say and make decisions on things that effect them. An Indigenous voice is important as it allows the people who are impacted most by certain laws and legislations to make positive change and be involved in the conversation surrounding these issues.
Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
Kind regards,
