Dear Co-Design Body
Co-design process: Submission for Kate Eastoe
I am a working mum, part of a family I love dearly that hails from city and country NSW. I studied law, and now work within an Australian business that I feel tries to listen and continuously improve.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
Recognition - equal recognition - is the most basic form of respect. We have a document that represents the foundation of a modern country at a time where recognition was not equal, and so it does not adequately represent or respect. We have an opportunity to improve the situation by taking a small step, and provided done in consultation with First Nations people, we should absolutely do so.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
It is important because how can decisions about First Nations people properly be made by leaders if the people impacted are not in the room to help understand what those decisions mean, stand behind those decisions, help land the actions of those decisions.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
It would give formal recognition, and capture legitimacy in the very document that does so for so many others already
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
The community I live in needs to be made more aware and needs to try harder to do so. A Voice to Parliament is another way for this to occur, noting there is still much more that can be done by the community itself.
This is not a hard task, but it is a deeply caring and important task, and is within your gift to help.
Thank you,
Kate Eastoe
