Submission to Co-design process
I grew up in Midginbil, Northern NSW and now live in Melbourne. I work as a store manager at an organic grocery, and am studying building and construction, as well as co-running an arts space. I am not indigenous, but want to add my voice and support to this important statement from the Indigenous peoples of Australia.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
I think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important because it is a collective statement from Indigenous people of this country asking to be recognised in the constitution on their terms. The government needs to listen and say yes. Indigenous people are the foundations of this country and their voice, statement and plans for the future are important and paramount to an equal, empowered future.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
All people, especially Indigenous people, will feel empowered when Indigenous people are recognised with a Voice to Parliament and granted the authority and power they deserve.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
Indigenous people know deeply the matters that are affecting them, and also know a lot of the solutions and strategies that could bring positive change.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
The constitution should reflect the first people of this country and their voice, not just those of settlers. Legislation is not enough, I feel it needs to start equally at the base structure of our political system; being the constitution.
