Co-design process: Submission for Liam Camilleri
I'm a late 40s male with an Anglo/Euro background who grew up in South Australia, Victoria and the ACT. I studied Graphic Design in Canberra and have worked in the industry ever since.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
I believe we should better acknowledge the traditional owners of our country and support the implementation of First Nations Voice to Parliament and a Makarrata Commission.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
It could help bring a better chance for genuine reconciliation and an increased understanding of Indigenous issues across the broader commiunity.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
It would be a greatly needed sign of respect and acknowledgement for the traditional owners from the Commonwealth and will help to bring a right to self-determination to first nations people who have suffered great disadvantage since European settlement.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
It would bring both symbolic and genuine lasting change; once enshrined in the Constitution an Indigenous voice could not be so easily silenced.
We need strong leaders to guide the public on these issues, leaders who are willing to show that the broader Australian public need not be fearful of the recommendations put forward by the Uluru Statement. We need leaders who are willing to enact genuine change to help improve the lives of Indigenous Australians.
