We can't achieve equity and capitalise on the full potential of our nation and all our people without acknowledging and including the voices of First Nations people. We need a national reset that starts with our core legal document - our constitution. First nations people must be have agency in decisions about their lives and legal right and be included at the highest level. No true change can come without this vital change. I support the key position points articulated in the statement from the heart.
The government must honour its election commitment to a referendum once a model for the Voice has been settled;
Enabling legislation for the Voice must be passed after a referendum has been held in the next term of Parliament; and
The membership model for the National Voice must ensure previously unheard Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have the same chance of being selected as established leadership figures.
