Co-design process: Submission for Kristy Mitchell
I am from Adelaide. I grew up in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. My Mum is an immigrant from England and my Dad is fourth generation white-Australian. I work as a digital business analyst at Discovery Holiday Parks Australia.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
I think it is vital for reconciliation that Aboriginal Australians are involved in decisions made about our country and the way in which it is governed, the way the land is cared for and the way our people and our children and children to come understand this country and it’s history.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
By encouraging healing amongst our indigenous people we can begin to move forward as a nation in unity and begin to reduce the trauma that exists currently in our communities that leads to substance abuse and inequality between white Australians and aboriginal Australians. There can be no healing without being heard.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
Because all people should have the right to have a say in matters that affect them.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
Because legislation is laws only and laws can chang, also constitution deals with principles as well.
Kind regards,
Kristy Mitchell
