Submission for Ramisa Azim
I am a secondary school pre-service teacher who lives in Victoria, Australia. I have engaged in the Bachelor of Business and now the Masters of Teaching. I am involved in multiple charity organisations, which include Uluru Statement from the Heart. I am not Indigenous, however I resonate with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them as the First Nations people.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is important in giving Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people a voice, being the original inhabitants of the land and not defined as "terra nullius" no mans land. Australia before British colonisation had its own heritage, culture and customs which has been stripped away through genocide, and ethnic cleansing from 1901 (at federation). It is important for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to have a say in what they believe should happen for them to assist in bridging critical matters and issues that stand between non-Indigenous and Indigenous people today.
How could a Voice to Parliament improve the lives of your community?
Australia needs a voice in parliament to inform on their practices that can shape and influence, this will assist in finding strategies that actually impact the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, through the use of their culture, customs and practices which can remedy many of the problems the community is facing today. These problems, that were largely brought here through the introduction of British influence. By engaging the Voice to parliament, Aboriginal and Torres strait islander people can encourage various strategies to combat, Obesity, mortality rates, deaths in custody and Aboriginal sovereignty (just to name a few) within Australia.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
The Voice to Parliament must be practiced not only merely stated, this changes the concept of being "seen" to actually being "heard." The Voice to parliament must be enshrined and reinforces in all aspects of the parliament and Australian society, to truly integrate this into our community and create a sense of belonging.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is important in engaging the Aboriginal community into the Australian constitution, by allowing them their own voice to advise on decisions that concern them. This allows for a community of people to foster and direct their own outcomes, based on their sound cultural and religious understanding.
Yours sincerely,
Ramisa Azim
