Dear Co-Design Body
Submission for Co-design process
I’m a 55 yo white woman from NZ, and have lived in Australia for 20 years, the last five as a fully-fledged citizen. I work in university administration. I feel privileged to have had a good education in the humanities, especially languages and history.
Why do you think the Uluru Statement from the Heart is important?
It’s the most important thing. The statement is a clarion call for respect and recognition, and an acknowledgement that the ongoing tragedy of colonisation in Australia needs to be faced up to and properly addressed for this country to begin to heal and build a future with First Nations rights at the very centre.
Why is it important for Indigenous people to have a say in the matters that affect them?
Self-determination is fundamental. And it’s enshrined in international law through the UN’s Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Why do you think it's important to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the Constitution, rather than include it only in legislation?
Because this is fundamental to Australia as a country and should absolutely not be left within the whim of governments in the future to tinker with through legislation.
Why do you think Australia needs a Voice to Parliament?
Because the Indigenous voices have been silenced by colonisation on their own lands that they have inhabited for 60,000 years. It’s beyond time for the power structures to listen.
Voice. Treaty. Truth!
